Vieux Fort South and Gros Islet registered contrasting victories when competition in the Kashif & Shanghai/Blackheart/St. Lucia Football Association sanctioned knock-out football tournament continued on Wednesday evening at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
In the opening match Vieux Fort South selection got past Anse La- Raye 3-0. Vieux Fort South were led to victory by goals from Travis Thomas in the 37th minute and two wonderfully struck long range efforts over the Anse La Raye goal keeper by second half substitute Marlon Soumere in the 81st and 86th minute.
Anse-La Raye had the better of the early exchanges in the game and have only themselves to blame for defeat as they created several clear cut scoring opportunities which they failed to convert.
In the second match of the evening Gros Islet edged out debutants Desruisseaux 3-2 in one of the tournament’s more exciting matches to date.
Canisius Phillip put Desruisseaux ahead in the 16th minute however national striker Kenwin ‘Dinx’ Mc Phee pulled one back for Gros Islet in the 35th minute to make tie the score which remained unchanged at the half way mark.
Eddie Popo from the penalty spot put Desruisseaux further ahead in the first minute after the break but Vard Daniel found the equalizer for Gros Islet in the 65th minute.
Gros Islet’s winner came one minute to game time when referee Canan St. Catherine, one of only two St. Lucian referees on the FIFA list the other being Sabina Charles Kirton controversially awarded Gros Islet a penalty kick.
St. Catherine who had not been handling the game well seemed to have been coned by the Gros Islet player who was fouled outside the area and threw himself into the penalty area seeking a penalty which he got.
National midfielder Everton ‘Sappleton’ Lambert calmly put away the penalty to give Gros Islet victory.
The final round of matches in the first round of the tournament will take place today.
