The Ministry of Home Affairs is gearing to use educating young people as a weapon in the fight against crime.
According to a spate of advertisements inclusive of those appearing in yesterday’s issues, the Ministry announced that it has secured financing from the Inter-American Development Bank towards the cost of the Citizen Security Programme.
According to the advertisements the Community Action Component of the programme caters for the provision of skills and vocational training to disadvantaged youths under the age of 25 who have dropped out of school or who may be illiterate.
It is stated that the goal of the training is to lower the rate of youth violence and crime and to ultimately safeguard neighbourhoods.
The programme will first cater to youths from Agricola/McDoom, Buxton/Friendship, Annandale/Lusignan, Rose Hall Town/Williamsburg, Sophia and Plaisance.
Research has long recognized that intervention at an early age and education are critical aspects in lowering the crime rate in any country.
Interested individuals are currently being invited to register.
