A magnificent opening partnership of 91 in 11 overs between West Indies batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon with an undefeated 64 and former West Indies U-19 player Richard Ramdeen 54 was the catalysis for their team, Free Weekend, led by West Indies Player Royston Crandon, coming out winners over the Hoomchand Pooran led Free Credit in the Berbice zone of the national Digicel summer slam Twenty20 cricket competition.
In the game at the Port Mourant Cricket ground, Free Credit Captain Pooran won the toss and elected to take first strike. They were off to a slow start, but recovered in the end to reached a challenging 142-5 in their allotment of overs. Anthony Bramble lead the way with a quick fire 32(5×4) from 19 deliveries in a late order rally after his teams was at one stage 108-5. Captain Pooran made 30(3×4) off the same number of deliveries.
Anthony D Andrade with 26(2×4) from 26 deliveries and Keith Fraser 23 (2×4, 1×6) from 14 also were also among the runs.
Their 50 coming up in the 10 over with the 100 being attained in the 15 over, after some lusty late order hitting by Bramble and Fraser.
Steven Latcha picked up 2 wickets bowling for Free Weekend.
In their turn at the crease there was no stopping Chattergoon and Ramdeen as they went on their merry way. Ramdeen 54 which came from 35 balls was the early aggressor as he plundered 6×4 and 1×6.
Chattergoon whose 64 took 50 deliveries in the meantime was playing sensible as the two batsmen went about their teams chase in their quest for victory.
Freed Credit to their credit through some tight bowling in the middle overs were able to sneak back into the game and with some 21 being needed in the last two overs. It was still anybody’s game.
Michael Newland, who at that stage had figures of 3 overs for 8 runs, was entrusted with the ball to bowl the penultimate over. However Chattergoon had different ideas and struck Newland for 22 runs in that same over to ease the butterflies and seal victory for his team, the victory coming up with a big six over mid wicket.
Bowling for Free Credit captain Pooran picked up 2 wickets.
Sherwin Murray was again not out this time his contribution was only 6 in the 31 runs partnership in 3 overs.
Free Weekend and Free Credit will still go on to represent Berbice in the national super six play off later this month.
