The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports has awarded the contract for the reconstruction work on the Umana Yana to the captain of the Konashen, Region Nine community, Paul Chekena. The contract was signed yesterday at the Ministry’s Main Street Office.
The Umana Yana will not be available for any public activities within the time span of this repair.
According to Minister of Youth Culture and Sports, Frank Anthony, the construction will start on July 16, next, and should conclude by mid August.
The Minister said that the cost of the contract will be $16M. A lot of the money will be spent on procuring the leaves, because special leaves have to be used in the construction of the Umana Yana.
He said that the team with most of the material will be in Georgetown before July 15, and work will be starting the day after. However, the Ministry will be in charge of the accommodation for the 30-member team of the Wai Wai community.
Minister Anthony revealed this will be the third time the Umana Yana will be rehabilitated. The past chief of Konashen, Elka, was the architect of the original Umana Yana building, and the same community has kept the tradition of up keeping the building.
Dr Anthony noted that the money will assist in boosting the economic activity within the community, since in the past when the community worked with the Ministry, a tremendous job was done.
According to Toshao of Konashen Region nine, Paul Chekena, the materials will be retrieved from the St Cuthbert Mission, while 30 persons will be a part of the reconstruction team.
The Umana Yana was first constructed in 1972 for the first Non Aligned Foreign Ministers conference.
