Parika armed robbery…
A Sergeant who to date has dedicated some 23 years of service to the Guyana Police Force has been granted bail after being charged, along with two others, for robbery under arms.
The Sergeant, 17774 Ragendra Major, of 1539 Cummings Park, Sophia, along with his brother 20-year-old Jomo Major and their friend Maurice Jarvis, made their appearance yesterday at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. The men were each charged with two counts of robbery under arms.
It is alleged that on June 11 last being armed with a dangerous weapon the trio robbed Ryan Kailass of one silver chain valued $80,000, one cellular phone worth $15,000 and $12,000 in cash. It is also alleged that on the same day the three men robbed Vijay Sirpaul of a cellular phone valued at $75,000 and $10,000 in cash. The charge was indictable and the men were not required to plea. Only the Police Sergeant was represented by a lawyer.
Attorney-at-law Mortimer Coddette in his bail application told the court that his client is a dedicated member of the Guyana Police Force with an unblemished record, is married and is a father of two. He went on to state that on the day in question his client was attending a function at Kingston in Georgetown, when he received a telephone call from his younger brother, Jomo.
Coddette further stated that his client’s brother was stranded in Parika, East Bank Essequibo, and requested that he pick him up. He added that when his client arrived in Parika his brother was with a friend and that sometime while on the road, his brother indicated to him that he wanted to urinate. Codette said his client was sitting in the car when the police approached and informed him about a robbery. The lawyer told the court that his client found himself in an unfortunate situation.
However Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the grounds of seriousness of the offence. He further told the court that the Police rank when stopped to be searched by police sped away but turned up subsequently at the Police Station after his brother and friend were arrested. He added that the accused were all positively identified by the victims. Jomo Major and Maurice Jarvis were each granted bail in the sum of $400,000 while the police sergeant was placed on $300,000 bail for each of the two charges. The men are to return to court on July 15.
According to a police release on the incident, about 19:30 hours on Friday June 11 last, three men who were armed with a handgun and a knife held up Kailass and Sirpaul and took away two cell phones, a silver chain and $22,000 in cash and drove away.
A report was made to the police who responded promptly and intercepted the motorcar along the Parika Access Road. Two masked men were seen in the back seat of the vehicle along with the driver who was found to be a Sergeant of Police, the report said.
The two masked men were placed into the police vehicle and the driver was allegedly observed throwing something into the bushes. The object was retrieved by the police patrol ranks and found to be a toy gun.
As a rank was about to enter the motorcar with the intention of escorting the vehicle to the station, the driver drove away and subsequently returned to the station with the vehicle bearing number plate PJJ 1957, the report added. He was arrested.
