The management of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is extending an invitation to popular calypsonian Derrick Mangal called ‘Bright Colours’ to report to the corporation’s Client Relations Officer to facilitate a proper investigation into his claims of being refused treatment for tuberculosis (TB) because he declined to take an HIV/AIDS test.
This is in response to a Kaieteur News article in which Mangal claimed that officials at a clinic housed in the Georgetown Hospital compound refused to administer treatment to him because of his refusal to take the test.
The Calypsonian had refused to take the test insisting that he had already done so on several occasions while suffering with the TB complaint.
However, when contacted for a comment on the issue, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan had contended that he was not in a position to do so, since Mangal did not identify the specific clinic he had attended.
Khan explained that while some clinics are located in the hospital’s compound, they fall under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and not the GPHC.
Yesterday Mangal told this newspaper, “It is obvious that if we’re speaking about tuberculosis, we are talking about the Chest Clinic.”
A release from the GPHC yesterday reiterated that discrimination towards patients is not promoted or condoned.
“Therefore, Mr. Mangal need not fear being victimized for having taken his plight to the media,” the Corporation noted.
The management of the GPHC stated that it continues to implore clients to address matters of concern with the Administration instead of the media, “for it must be understood that the media is only an avenue which can highlight the problem with which clients may be faced”.
“If the hospital is unaware of the problem, it stands to reason that no steps can be taken to rectify same. Furthermore, clients are reassured that all complaints that are brought to the Client Relations Officer (formerly Complaints’ Desk) are treated seriously and with great urgency and efficiency. This department falls directly under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, who peruses all complaints and takes the necessary measures to resolve them,” the GPHC said.
