Yvonne Murray turned in a flawless display to register 6 games and a positive spread of 678 to cart off the honours when the Worldly Words Scrabble Club staged its inaugural Intermediate tournament in Hopetown Berbice, last Sunday afternoon.
Floyd Carmichael finished second with 4 games and a positive spread of 226 while Roger Gonsalves closed off the podium spots, also with four games but a lower spread of 87. Murray started her day with a 123 spread drubbing over Elton Chase and a second round win over Kampta Narine (214).
Roger Gonsalves was her final pre-lunch victim by a spread of an even 100 before she disposed of Nicholas Grant (21) in the first game after lunch. Floyd Carmichael fought valiantly but eventually succumbed by a spread of 52 in the fifth sitting shortly before Kenisha Richmond surrendered by a spread of 168.
Ronald Forde was adjudged the best male novice on show after finishing with 3 games and a positive spread of 166 while Kenisha Richmond, who staved off the defeat at the hands of Murray to chalk up 3 games with a negative spread of 143, earned the nod for the best female novice. Stacy Cadogan did not make it into the winners’ row but was given a trophy for cheery disposition throughout the tournament.
The team that traveled from Georgetown, led by Worldly Words President, Nicholas Grant, also took the opportunity to impart valuable tips of the sport to the Berbicians. Mr. Grant said that he was encouraged by the support received from the Berbicians and promised to return to the area in the near future to continue with the developmental works.
The team is currently contemplating a visit to Mibicuri, up the Mahaicony River, to promote the sport and organize a tournament.
