The battle for the multi-million dollar estate of executed businessman, Terry Bacchus, is continuing, with Bacchus’s relatives denying claims of removing assets and collecting monies which he had on the night he was gunned down.
Further, a Court Marshal has so far been unable to serve a court order on the woman who was first appointed administrator of his estate – Kumarie Ramkellawan— who bore a son for Bacchus five years ago.
The High Court on Friday named Bacchus’s common-law wife, Bibi Ally, as co-administrator of the estate, but that order is yet to be served on the other woman. Yesterday, the Court Martial attempted several times to serve the order, but could not find the woman.
Anil Nandlall, the lawyer, who is representing Kumarie Ramkellawan, said that he has no problem with Bibi Ally, who has two children for Bacchus, being a joint administrator because at the end of the day, the man’s estate should be divided between his children.
According to the lawyer, Bibi Ally, who has two children for Bacchus was separated from Bacchus at the time of his death. But Bibi Ally, in a sworn affidavit said she and Bacchus remained married at the time of his death.
Nandlall accused Bacchus’s brothers of unlawfully removing assets from all of the businesses that he owned. But Bacchus’s older brother, Jerry Bacchus, yesterday vehemently denied this claim.
He said that since the court appointed Kashir Khan as receiver of the assets, they have had nothing to do with the business. In fact, Jerry Bacchus said that Khan himself placed padlocks on the bond that is located at his mother’s home.
He also said that the relatives have been trying to get Khan to close all other businesses, but to no avail. They say business is going on at some locations.
Bacchus owned and operated several businesses in the city. These included two stores in the Regent Multiplex Mall and a store on Water Street. He also owned a bond on South Road and operated three stalls in Stabroek Market.
On East Coast Demerara, he operated the Double Discount Store, and 20 stalls in the Mon Repos Market. On the West Coast, he operated a business at 102 Public Road, Anna Catherina, where he lived.
There he had a bond and another bond at his mother’s residence.
Bacchus’s relatives, including his brothers with whom he conducted business, want to secure his assets and hand over management of the estate to his mother and his common-law wife, Bibi Ally, with whom Bacchus had two daughters.
While the court battle is ongoing, Bibi Ally claims that the other woman, namely Ramkellawan, with whom Bacchus had a visiting relationship, is plundering his estate.
Relatives have claimed that three containers of electrical items from one of his stores at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, worth an estimated $50 million, have been removed.
Relatives are up in arms over the fact that the receiver has exercised his authority to seal the bond at the home of Bacchus’s mother, while allowing other businesses to operate.
Bacchus was gunned down on Water Street on May 22, minutes after he had just left one of his business places.
