– Fitness and confidence high
UK-based Kevin McKenzie believes that the national Sevens Rugby squad is so good that if Guyana were to field two teams at the CAC Games and NACRA Tournament they both would meet in the final.
McKenzie, who returned home to contest for a spot on the national team, told Kaieteur Sport shortly after the completion of the two-day trials at the National Stadium over the weekend that every member of the squad is extremely fit, strong and rearing to go in front of the home crowd.
“All 24 players are fit and strong and eager to get into competition and I feel that if we’re to put two teams in the tournament we will definitely meet each other in the final,” McKenzie said exuding confidence.
The highly regarded national standout, who has a wealth of experience playing at the international level disclosed that the mood among the players is good and confidence is high, adding that when you mix home advantage to those the outcome will be success.
He, however, cautioned that even though there is no thought of failure in the squad, Guyana will still have to go out on the field and execute and not take anything for granted.
Touching on how it felt to play on a facility far more superior that what they are accustomed to at the National Park, McKenzie said it was indeed a pleasure to play on such a world-class field and they would relish the opportunity to get a few more trial matches scheduled there before the tournament starts.
According to him, playing on such a smooth surface helped improved the all-round skills of the players since it allowed for proper passing and moving and generally the level of the game was high.
He noted that even though there weren’t a lot of persons witnessing the trials, the whole thought of playing on such a big facility created some amount of pressure.
McKenzie mentioned that even though some of the players suffered from a bit of nervousness on the first day, they all lifted their game on Sunday and ended the trials with some solid performances.
He attributed the tenseness to the pressure of trying to catch the selectors’ eyes from a very competitive group.
