– reign supreme after low-scoring final
Kings dominated Wismar Pistons with a strong second half offensive performance to ensure that they are crowned the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) League Champions at the end of a low-scoring final at the Mackenzie Sports Club court.
After being affected by three postponements owed to inclement weather, patriotic fans thronged the renowned outdoor venue to watch what started as a closely fought first half, transformed into an offensive nightmare for Pistons and victory for Kings.
Kings’ 51-42 win was built against the backdrop of strong performances from the second-strings, Neil Marks, who led their scoring with 16 points, Omally Sampson, who finished with 14 points and the former national junior shooting guard, Orin Rose, who had 11 points.
National senior players, Jason Alonzo and Marvin Hartman reportedly focused their energies on the defensive ends of the court, effectively shutting down Pistons’ big three. Only Trevor Profitt managed double figures for Pistons with a game-high 21 points.
Pistons’, Quincy Jones and Nevin Grenville were completely shut out of the game offensively as Kings’ second string offensive players took advantage in the second half. The first quarter ended at 14 apiece before Kings took a one point 23-22 lead at halftime.
However, as Alonzo and Hartman upped their defensive energy in the third quarter, Pistons made a mess offensively, scoring only seven points in the period compared to Kings’ 14, which meant that Kings doubled Pistons’ offence in a close-out tactic that worked.
Kings will collect $100,000 and the championship trophy for their efforts while Pistons settled for $60,000 and second-place trophy. Earlier, Royals blew away Raiders 71-45 to claim the $40,000 third place award leaving Raiders to take home $20,000 for fourth.
Harold Adams scored 20 points for Royals while Orlando Glasgow added 16 points and Marlon Pollydore 15 points; Chris Williams completed the team’s assault with 12 points. Raiders’ only player in double figures was Odinga Hunte with 19 points.
