The Digicel Summer Smash Twenty/20 national first division cricket began in Berbice with wins for Free Weekend and Free Credit.
The competition got underway on Saturday in Berbice with two matches after a delay of one day due to rain. The competition was switched from the Port Mourant Cricket ground Corentyne to the Edinburgh Ground East Bank Berbice. The Berbice areas have been divided into three Digicel Free Zone teams with the individual names being Free Weekend, Free Talk and Free Credit.
The two matches played on Saturday saw Free Weekend and Free Credit scoring victories over Free Talk to advance to the final on Wednesday at the Port Mourant ground.
In the first game, Free Weekend, which was led by West Indies all rounder Royston Crandon, won from Free Talk, which was lead by nation player Davendra Bishoo, by five wickets with four deliveries to spare.
Free Weekend won the toss and asked Free Talk to take first strike and they reached a challenging 159-8 in their 20 overs with Devon Clements leading the away with an accomplish 65 which included 6×4 and 2×6 off 42 deliveries. Jonathan Foo contributed 19 (1×6, 2×4) Krisendat Ramoo 15 not out and Rajendra Latchana 14. Bowling for Free Talk, off spinner Steven Latcha took 4 and Yougendra Harrinarine 2 wickets.
In reply Free Weekend kept the score board ticking over and reached home with four deliveries to spare. Skipper Royston Crandon led by example with a disciplined 46 (3×4, 1×6) from 37 deliveries. He was well supported by the hard hitting Sherwin Murray a quick fire 42 (3×6, 3×4) off a mere 19 deliveries. The two featuring in a quick fire 77 run unbroken partnership in a mere 6.1 overs for the sixth wicket, after their team was in a spot of bother at 88-5. Sewnarine Chattergoon made 26 (2×4, 1×6) off 17 deliveries.
Bowling for Free Talk Pacer Keon Joseph picked up 3 while Ramoo took 2.
In the second game Free Credit lead by national player Hoomchand Pooran defeated the hapless Free Talk combination by four wickets.
Free Talk batted first and were only able to muster 114-8 in their allotment of overs with Renrick Batson top scoring with 49 (3×4, 1×6) from 48 deliveries. Bowling for Free Credit pacer Michael Newland picked up 2 wickets while five other bowlers took one wicket each.
In their turn at the crease Free Credit cruised to 115-6 in 16.3 overs Anthony D’Andrade top scoring with 36 (2×6, 3×4), Skipper Pooran was 28 (2×4, 1×6) not out, while Davendra Thakurdeen contributed 26 (3×4). Bowling for Free Talk all rounder Jonathan Foo picked up three wickets.
The competition is being played with the aim of selecting the best possible Twenty20 team to represent Guyana in the WICB Regional Twenty20 tournament next month in Barbados and the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The top to Berbice teams are expected to advance to the National Playoffs or Super Sixes Stage which commences on June 25.
More action is set for June 18 with GT Flex Text vs. East Bank Top-up’s at Enmore; over in the Essequibo Blackberries Zone: June 19, North Essequibo Bold vs. South Essequibo Storm and South Essequibo Storm vs. West Demerara Javelin’s at Anna Regina, while on June 20 North Essequibo Bold play West Demerara Javelin’s at Wakenaam.
