… Amerindian Hostel death
By Michael Jordan
The knife wound that 63-year-old Evelyn Daniels sustained at the Amerindian Hostel indicated that she took her own life, a source close to the investigation said yesterday.
Daniels was found with her throat slashed two Mondays ago at the Princes Street location.
While police ruled it a suicide, other sources had expressed suspicion that she was slain, while suggesting that it was near-impossible for a person to take their life in this manner.
Dispelling this notion, the source revealed that Daniels’s wound was at the upper portion of her neck. The official explained that suicide victims usually slash the upper portion of the neck, and the wound “is almost a straight cut,” as was the case with Daniels’s injury.
In cases of murder, the area where the wound begins is deep, while the end of the cut is not as pronounced.
“In this case (of murder) you would have damage to the carotid artery(the artery which supplies the head and neck with oxygenated blood),” the source said.
“In the woman’s (Daniels) case, there was not a deep wound and it all leads to (the conclusion) that it was self-inflicted.”
Kaieteur News understands that the woman’s carotid arteries were not severed.
Cause of death was reportedly due to shock and hemorrhage due to an incise wound.
Some sources had suggested that Daniels had taken her own life after repeated promises for her to return to Matthews Ridge had fallen through.
Sources within the Hostel had told Kaieteur News that the woman was seen minutes earlier in the administrator’s office.
A police press release had stated that another resident had seen Daniels cutting her throat and raised an alarm.
Officials from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs had also said that on May 31, last, Daniels was seen inflicting fatal wounds to herself at the Amerindian Hostel. The Ministry said that the staff immediately rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to the statement, the Ministry promptly responded to the emergency call of the Administrator of the facility by dispatching a team consisting of the Permanent Secretary and two Project Officers. Internal findings by the team indicated suicide.
