The general evaluation by members of the Organising Committee and visiting Inspection delegates signalled that all systems are in place for the staging of the Central American & Caribbean segment of the Rugby Sevens Tournament.
The occasion had in its presence President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento; Tom Jones- General Manager of NACRA and IRB Representative; Keith Joseph- Senior Committee member of CASCO; GT& T’s Representatives Terry Holder and Abena Fung; K.A Juman Yassin President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and Dr. Karen Pilgrim.
CASCO’s Keith Joseph speaking with the media said they were pleased to be visiting for the second time and was heartened by the application from the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to host the Games right here.
“We were very impressed by the information that was provided by the rugby fraternity and though there was the initial bit of apprehension about Guyana’s ability to host such a tournament of this magnitude our first visit was met with pleasant surprises,” Joseph said.
He added that the Stadia and hotel facilities ranked among the best that any rugby competition will witness, pointing out that Guyana has really outdone itself in terms of hosting the event.
“I have to say that we are really satisfied with all the arrangements that are in place, especially after our meeting with the Organising Committee,” he disclosed.
He said that the Central Committee will be housed at the Princess Hotel and all the other aspects related to the tournament have met the satisfaction of them, while they were assured that preparations are well advanced for the successful staging of the tournament.
“We believe that the teams will be very happy with what Guyana has to offer when they arrive, but even though we are looking for the historical advantage of the occasion, the most important feature is its legacy,” Joseph reminded.
Jones in his remarks said that the event is a historical and important one, stating that it will mark the first time that rugby has been accepted into a multi-sport Games.
He pointed out that the facility that the Games will be played at and the quality of the staff at the Princess Hotel appeared to be excellent and wished Guyana every success.
Yassin in his presentation said that he was hoping that the event marks the beginning of bigger things to come for this country, especially where hosting international Games are concerned.
He referred to the construction of the Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis facility at Non Pareil and the intended synthetic track as examples of work in progress that will allow Guyana to host more international competitions.
He thanked all those concerned with the granting of the Stadium at no cost, while disclosing that they were expecting other fringe benefits from the Government leading up to the July 24-25 tournament.
Yassin further recognised the input made by GT&T who were involved since the early stages of the event and the Management of Princess Hotel that gave them substantial reduction of the rates for the teams during their stay.
He, however, called on other members of business community to come on board and offer their support to the event. Holder in his short address spoke of GT&T’s history of involvement with the rugby fraternity.
“GT&T have a history of collaborating with the GRFU where we support teams going abroad as well as assisting in the popularisation of the sport over the years,” Holder reminded.
He said rugby in Guyana is now being respected more than ever before and because of their involvement from an early stage they could now share in the glory.
Holder, who also serves on the Organising Committee called on more businesses to add their support, adding that they must not let the opportunity to assist be lost, but rather get on board and help the Union.
“They need to play an active role in this historical occasion which will see rugby being played at the Stadium for the first time.”
Nascimento gave an overview of the format of the competition and the teams that are coming. The GRFU Boss said that it is his opinion that Guyana is the best in the Caribbean and Central America and urged locals to come out and full the Stadium.
Meanwhile, two days of trials will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the National Stadium.
