An Austin Street, Kitty, businessman was yesterday granted bail on a charge of discharging a loaded firearm with intent. The accused, Imran Khan, made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton.
It is alleged that on June 4, on Light Street, Alberttown ,he unlawfully and maliciously discharged a loaded firearm with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm to Guyana Defence Force rank, Elroy Newton. The charge was indictable and the accused was not required to plead.
Khan was represented by defense counsel, Pamela De Santos, who told the court that Newton no longer wishes to offer any evidence in the matter.
She went on to tell the court that Newton attacked and robbed her client of some $2 M.
She added that no weapon was found on her client, neither was a gun recovered.
Mrs. De Santos further asked for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum and managed to secure the man’s pre trial liberty in the sum of $60,000.
Khan will make his next court appearance on July 19.
Also at the court, yesterday, Elroy Newton was charged with robbery under arms. It is alleged that on June 4 last, being armed with a gun he robbed Safraz Khan of $2 M. He was represented by defence counsel, Gregory Gaskin.
Gaskin too informed the court that Khan no longer wishes to proceed with the matter. Gaskin further pleaded with the magistrate for bail in a reasonable sum since the parties have all decided to settle the matter.
Bail was granted to Newton, who is a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force, to the tune of $65,000. He too is expected to return to court on July 19.
