Bartica residents yesterday charged Police brutality in a number of instances when senior police officers held a meeting in the mining community following a lingerie show that turned ugly.
Residents have expressed outrage after Winston Miller claimed that he was beaten by police officers after they were denied entry into the place.
Miller, a businessman, said that the policemen refused to pay the $1, 000 entry fee and because they were denied entry he was gun-butted and kicked by the policemen.
Promoter of the show, Alex Wayne, denied the police claim that the show was a striptease show and that is why they were seeking entry. He said the Ms Bootilicious pageant is a “bedroom pageant” and the women model in lingerie.
The incident has sparked an outcry by residents, who claim rampant Police excesses in the vibrant mining community, which includes a number of Brazilian miners.
Yesterday, senior Police officers, including Ivelaw Whittaker, Public and Press Relations Officer; Senior Superintendent Colin West, Officer in Charge Tactical Service Unit; Senior Superintendent Deryck Younge; Acting Divisional Commander E& F Division; and Detective Superintendent William Ramraj were there to meet with the residents.
The meeting was held at the Bartica Regatta Pavilion. Residents Ophelia Persaud and Maggie Washington, highlighted many instances of the Police targeting and beating their sons, while Maurice Rodrigues bemoaned the slothful pace at which investigations are being conducted into the accident that claimed his son’s life.
Sherwin Downer spoke about the fact that Barticians are very concerned about the police behaviour towards Mr. Miller at the Ms Bootilicious pageant.
The visiting team promised to conduct an impartial investigation speedily and based on their findings the force will ensure that relative justice is served.
The ranks involved will be immediately transferred from Bartica; even as Barticians call for their immediate dismissal for fear that they will further disgrace “our Police Force at other locations around Guyana.”
Sources indicated that at present, the ranks involved are under close arrest.
