…Suspect in police custody
Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital are doing all they can to save the life of a 75- year-old businessman of St Lawrence, East Bank Essequibo.
Reports are that 75-year-old Rudolph Moonsammy was chopped about his body by one of his employees who has since been identified as ‘Patrick’.
This newspaper was told that on Monday evening two of Moonsammy’s employees were consuming alcohol at the back of his yard. Some time later persons said they heard the two men arguing among themselves.
This newspaper was told that Moonsammy subsequently emerged from his house and tired to talk to the two men. However, one of the men then armed himself with a cutlass and began chopping Moonsammy. An eyewitness who asked not to be named said that people stood and watched as the man was chopping Moonsammy and begged him to stop but the man totally ignored them. The eyewitness said no one made any attempts to venture into Moonsammy’s yard as his attacker was still armed.
This newspaper was told that the elderly man then crawled to a vehicle, which was parked in his yard and lay there for some time.
According to reports the man then crawled into his house and then into a bedroom and lay on his bed for some one and a half hours before people ventured into his home to render assistance.
People in the area said the police arrived several hours after the incident since there is no proper telephone service in the area.
“When people go in de house and see dis man de whole bed was blood and then dem decide to carry he to the hospital.”
Once the report was made the suspect was taken into police custody to assist with investigation.
Up to press time yesterday Moonsammy remained on life support in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Ever since the incident the man’s relatives said that he remained unconscious. Moonsammy lived alone at his St. Lawrence home while most of his relatives live overseas.
The businessman who has a large chicken farm employed several persons in the area.
