Narrow escape! Simone Baburam stands near to the utility pole which almost killed her, as a GPL crew removes the wires
Simone Baburam learned yesterday afternoon what it is like to narrowly escape death when a rotting utility pole came crashing down on her car as she stood near it.
The incident occurred at around 13:30 hrs in front of the Lot 320 East Street home of Baburam’s in-laws, who had been pleading for two years with the Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL) to remove the same pole.
A shaken Simone Baburam told Kaieteur News that she and her husband had visited her mother-in law earlier in the day.
They then left (at around 13:30 hrs) and Baburam was shutting the gate when she heard a “cracking sound”.
“Just as I turned around, I saw the wires and the pole coming down.”
The pole then crashed onto the bonnet of her car, missing her by just a few feet.
The East Bank Demerara resident recalled that she was so terrified that she remained at the same spot for several seconds. The vehicle sustained damage to the hood and the front windscreen was cracked.
A GPL crew eventually arrived and removed the pole and electrical wires. However, one of the crew members insisted that although GPL’s wires were attached to it, the pole was the property of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T).
Baburam’s relatives then told Kaieteur News that it has been two years since they have been appealing to GPL to send a crew to replace the defective pole.
Despite their repeated calls, no one ever turned up.
Mrs. Baburam has since filed a complaint to GPL’s management.
