Dear Editor,
Jamal Ali’s contribution in Stabroek News of Saturday 5, 2010 titles “The PPP Government is sincere in working with the African Guyanese sector in Society” is either the figment of his imagination or a major contortion of the language we use.
The reality is that the PPP Government is sincere in ‘working the African Guyanese Sector but certainly not ‘working with’ it.
Look around and see the reality, Mr. Ali; first they are working the Afro-Guyanese Sector by propping up a few front folks, The Afro Guyanese propelled into high office, from Bishop to Bully — from Trade Unionist to Trickster— have not and cannot help the Afro-Guyanese Community—apart from personal gain derived, and the image the PPP bosses wish to portray.
These chaps do neither represent nor do they speak for the African community in Guyana.
I recommend as compulsory reading for Ali and those who wish to swallow this pill of deception, the book ‘The spook who sat at the door”. It is the story of a large American Company responding to criticism that they do not employ Black People, recruiting a black man appointing him Vice President, giving him a large office at the front of the building complex. Big sign board, Chauffeur Driver, Limo (that’s what makes the Nigger Happy they noted).
However he was not invited or involved, nor did he care when the major decisions were made or serious meetings held to deal with the direction of business.
Stand up like a man and not a sycophant and you are punished and penalized. Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam and Buxton of course are the classic examples.
Another example, if the Government wanted to truly work with and not merely work this sector, it would have built the Berbice Bridge from Ithaca on the West Bank to Sisters Village on the East Bank. Here the river narrows. The soil is good and years ago a surveyor identified this as the most suitable site.
It was the site of choice when engineers looked at this project years ago — But this activity would have brought economic benefits to the two Afro-dominated communities, so we build a bridge at much greater cost up north where so much engineering challenges had to be overcome and we pay so much to cross the river.
Our tradition and history are the foundation upon which every society is built.
Remember when they took office in 1992 every effort was made to downplay our Republic Celebrations. One PPP leader said to me because it was to honour Cuffy and Burnham (the belief being quite incorrect).
Some of us had to protest while the PPP hosted a party excursion that day and night,
Mr Ali must know the nature of the “Beast” in Guyana — or accepting the fact that a leopard never changes its spots..
Symbols and traditions are necessary, that is why in passing Raphael Trotman’s letter is so timely.
Mr. Ali, tell me why in spite of a public pronouncement ten years ago, the PPP has shamefully failed to built a monument at the Parade Ground to honour the hundreds of Martyred African Slaves slaughtered and had their heads cut off and placed on poles at this site off and south of Middle Street.
The government is aware that this was planned by the previous Administration which built the Enmore Martyrs Monument. Every year since 1992 the PPP Leaders do not have the decency to recall or credit who built that monument at Enmore.
Mr. Ali, give me solid examples to justify your story. Not tokenism but realistic things such as taking the steel heel off the city, because of its perceived ethnic and political complexion.
We want these days, the truth —and nothing but the whole truth.
