In observance of World Environmental Day, the Guyana Mangrove Restoration project has undertaken one of its newest initiatives, the first of many planned activities, which includes the experimental planting of young mangroves along the Lima sea shore.
This exercise saw the participation of both first and second year students of the Essequibo School of Agriculture and, Project Co-ordinator Mr. Bissesar Chintamanie.
Mr. Chintamanie reiterated that this exercise represents the first phase of the primary activities of all restoration activities.
He asserted that coming out of a focal group meeting which focused on conservation and restoration of mangroves, a specialist was assigned by NARI to undertake a series of tests and experiments on the soil at both Lima and Henrietta.
Mr. Chintamanie said that studies which followed the Ecological Restoration Protocols resulted in these two areas being recommended for resuscitation which would also set the stage for the natural regeneration of mangroves.
According to the research scientist, mangroves are being planted in small areas which will lend to larger areas as the growth of these plants is closely monitored. He added that mangroves eco systems, flora and fauna, are very diverse.
He said that the plants served as a nesting for birds, juvenile fishes and shrimps.
The project which is closely linked to the community, Mr. Chintamanie said, has so far sought the participation of members of the community who were exposed to several seminars and focal group meetings conducted by the Guyana Mangrove Restoration project in Region Two.
World Environment Day is being observed under the theme “protecting biodiversity”.
