Like her predecessors Trenace Lowe and Michelle John would have done on many occasions, an enterprising and definitely talented Chelsea Edghill added two more titles to her collection when she took the Girls’ Under-15 and Under-18 scalps on Sunday.
With the two titles adding to the U-13 accolade she won the day before, Edghill seems on path to snatch the ‘Most Outstanding Female Player’ award in the Guyana Table Tennis Association and National Sports Commission-sponsored Independence tournament.
Edghill defeated Akeicia Nedd11-8, 11-8, 11-7 in straight sets to win the U-15 title with Jamaali Homer snatching third place from Olivia Weekes in a closely contested game that took five sets to decide. It ended 8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 13-11 and 13-11 in Homer’s favour.
In the U-18 final, Edghill, who is the current Caribbean U-13 Girls’ Table Tennis Champ, won a defining duel against Adielle Rosheuvel 12-10, 11-5 and 11-6 again in straight sets which clearly set her apart. Edghill has won all her titles in straight sets.
Nedd defeated Angelina Rampersaud 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 for third place in the U-18 competition as
Nigel Bryan successfully defended his Boys’ title against Denzil Hopkinson winning 11-6, 7-11, 11-4 and 11-9. Fraser defeated Zane Humphrey for third place.
