Pensioners and other persons who visited the Agricola Post office early yesterday morning had to be turned away as there were no monies at the institution to conduct business.
Around 07:00 hours yesterday, staffers of the post office turned up for work as per normal when they discovered that the place had been broken into.
Further checks revealed that the perpetrators gained entry to the building by wrenching open a steel barrier that was designed to protect the southern door. They then forced their way through the wooden door behind the steel barrier and entered the building.
Two safes in the building were torched and the monies taken. Another safe from all indication was opened with a key. Reports are that some $3.2M was taken by the perpetrators.
None of the people in the vicinity could recall anything amiss. They did not see the glare from the cutting torch nor did they hear any sound to suggest that the post office was being broken into.
No one would say whether the post office was fitted with an alarm. People did say that the post office employed a guard service which functions only by day, something that a police rank described as nonsense.
There were fluorescent lamps around the building. One of them had been removed but there was no one to say whether these lamps were working during the robbery.
All Post Master General, Henry Dundas, would say was that he cannot comment until there has been an audit of the post office.
