– Trinidad pathologist says samples at local police lab poorly stored
Trinidad pathologist, Dr. Valery Alexandrov, disclosed yesterday that the results on the autopsy he performed on the remains of Sangeeta Persaud should be available by Saturday.
And he voiced concern that specimens of her remains that are at the Guyana Police Force laboratory are not being properly stored.
According to Dr. Alexandrov, after he conducted the second post mortem he proceeded on vacation immediately and has only returned to work a week ago.
Hence, testing on the samples he had taken from Persaud’s remains will commence this week. He went on to explain that after collecting samples, it was still a bit difficult to get all the samples he needed for his analysis.
According to Dr. Alexandrov, he then visited the Guyana Police Force laboratory to see if they could provide him with some of the samples which were taken by Dr. Nehal Singh.
The pathologist explained that after searching through the police lab for some two hours he eventually found the samples. To his surprise, the doctor said the samples were just sitting in a plastic container with no preservatives.
“If you are going to take body samples for further testing it’s common knowledge that they should be placed in formalin, but the sample that we found was just there decaying,”.
The man said he immediately placed the samples in formalin in order to prevent further deterioration. He added that by Tuesday, the samples will be sent to the lab at his institution for testing. He however repeated his belief that the child died of meningitis. He explained that from what Dr. Singh related to him all the symptoms were there.
“When I did my examination there was not much brain samples left for me…but what he (Dr. Singh) told me there was a large layer of ‘pus’ (fluid formed in infected tissue) covering the brain and that is consistent with meningitis.
On April 25 last, Alexandrov, a specialist in forensic and anatomic pathology, conducted a second post mortem on the exhumed remains on the West Bank Demerara teen.
Persaud, of Canal Number Two Polder died at the West Demerara Regional Hospital hours after an alleged attempt to ‘exorcise demons’ from her failed.
