12 athletes from the three counties included
The Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation has selected 12 senior and junior athletes that will represent this land at two upcoming International competitions to be held in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico from August 3rd – 7th, 2010.
The local strongmen will compete at the 8th IPF/NAPF North American Regional Power Lifting Championships and the 1st Central American/Caribbean Games Power lifting Championships.
Recently crowned Caribbean 82.kg Champion/ best lifter and defending Regional Champion Randolph Morgan as well as ‘Big’ John’ Edwards the 125kg Men’s Open and Masters M1 Champion will be spearheading the team.
Regional Champion Mervyn Moses will not be defending his title due to injury.
Guyana will be mounting a serious challenge for the team championship honours at this level apart from individual glory.
The full team comprising 4 Berbice based, six Georgetown based and two Essequibo based lifters are as follows;

Vijai Rahim and Wazeem Immamdeen will also be competing in the Junior/Sub Junior category.
Rahim, who has been excelling as a junior ever since his first competition two years ago, will be attempting to break the current World Sub-Junior Dead Lift Record of 221kgs; this will be his last year in this category and will be aiming to go out with a bang.
Rahim has already established a legitimate lift of 215kgs set at the just concluded Junior National Championships before failing his attempt at 222.5kgs by a technical fault in his lift.
President of the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation Peter Green said he is optimistic that with Rahim’s ability and talent, he will set the new record and in so doing, become Guyana’s First World Record Holder for Power Lifting.
The final team, Manager, Coach as well as the selected Delegate to Congress and IT Specialist for a seminar on electronic scoring practices for international championship meets will be named following the conclusion of visa interviews with the U.S. Embassy.
The Federation will be hosting a grand fundraising event in July to assist with expenses for the trip and they are also appealing to Corporate Guyana to partner and assist them to make Guyana’s participation, reality. The cost for each athlete is around US$1,500.
