Ray Anthony, 24, the prisoner who was found on Independence Day with over 258 Grams of drugs at the New Amsterdam Prison has implicated a Prison Officer who he said gave the drugs to him to give to a remand prisoner.
He appeared in court on Friday before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of possession of Narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The man told the court that he is the water orderly in prison and on the day in question there was a fun day in the Penal Institution .He was out in the yard doing his chores when a Prison Officer (name given) called him and gave him a parcel to take to a remand prisoner.
He was in the process of doing so when he was stopped by another officer and the drug was unearthed on him. He claimed that at the time he did not know what was in the parcel.
Prosecutor Dayaram had earlier told the court that around 15:30 hrs on May 26, prison officials attached to the penal institution were in the process of doing their routine checks when the saw the prisoner who was in the yard at the time acting in a suspicious manner. They immediately challenged him as to his strange behaviour and discovered that he had on his person leaves, seeds and stem of the prohibited plant. He was detained and the police were called in. He was later charged.
The Magistrate upon hearing the prisoner’s revelation said that it was not funny and after consulting with the prosecutor changed his plea to not guilty and urged that some probing be done in the matter. Prosecutor Dayaram had earlier stated that the prisoner was only saying what he said because he was in a hole and was looking for some way to get out.
Anthony who hails from Angoy’s Avenue was incarcerated for being in possession of smoking utensils.
The matter will be called again on July 16th.
