Flamingo’s Shem Porter delivered an accurate right-foot dagger that pierced the heart of Tiger Bay who they defeated in sudden death penalty kicks to cart off the Khan/Squires/ Morgan sponsored 4-a-side Knockout Futsal Tournament which ended yesterday, at the West La Penitence Playfield.
Flamingo Captain Shem Porter receives the winning trophy from co-sponsor Phillip Squires (third right standing) in the presence of team-mates yesterday.
The tournament sponsored by Scheherazade Khan / Phillip Squires / Guy Morgan saw the participation of eight teams including Tiger Bay, Flamingo, North East, Karate Kids, The Island, Floss Boss, Island Youth Squad and All Stars in matches which had a duration of 16 minutes divided into halves of eight minutes.
In the opening round, Tiger Bay defeated North East 1-0; Island beat Floss Boss by a similar margin; Karate Kids eased past All Stars 2-0 and Flamingo beat Island Youth Squad 2-1.
In semi-final results: Tiger Bay was easy winners over Island by a 2-0 margin, while Flamingo beat Karate Kids 2-0.
In the final between Flamingo and Tiger Bay, both teams failed to produce the quality of performance that was exhibited in their respective semi-final encounters.
National mid-fielder Shawn ‘Fatso’ Bishop came close to scoring for Tiger Bay when he unleashed a fierce left-foot shot that ricocheted off the upright and rebounded into play, while Flamingo’s best chance came when Quincy Bourne hit a thunderous right-footer that landed just outside the left upright.
After those two close shaves, it seemed as though both teams had settled for overtime as no serious threat was made on goal.
Overtime saw no break in the nil-all deadlock, forcing the clash into sudden death penalty which was won by Flamingo against a star-studded Tiger Bay unit that included Bishop, Andrew Murray Jnr and Solomon Austin, players who play at the senior level.
The wining trophy was presented by co-sponsor and National Men’s Tennis champion Phillip Squires.
