– driver in custody
Eight-year-old Anuradha Dawan died at the Georgetown Public Hospital shortly after 8:00 hours yesterday morning, about 36 hours after she was hit by a mini-bus in South Sophia.
According to the child’s relatives, Anuradha was sent by her mother shortly after 4.30 pm on Friday afternoon to purchase a bottle of water. When she did not return on time, her father was asked to go and check on her, but before he could leave the yard, a message came that the child had been in an accident and was taken to the hospital.
The accident occurred on the public road dividing A and B Fields Sophia.
Relatives related that after the bus hit the child, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran off. Unfortunately for him, a police patrol was passing at the time and public-spirited citizens caught him and handed him over. He was taken to the Turkeyen Police Station by the policemen. This newspaper understands that the driver was not booked at the time, nor was he detained. Nevertheless, he has now been taken into custody.
Anuradha was under intensive care from the time of her admission and was hooked up to the ventilator until her death yesterday. She suffered pulmonary injuries with a lung contusion and bleeding in the brain. Anuradha is to be cremated on Wednesday.
The vehicle that hit the child is parked in the compound of the Turkeyen Police Station and according to the markings, it is registered to Associated Packers Incorporated, of 47-48 Industrial Estate, Eccles.
