Players to attend meeting today at MSC
The Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Senior Selection Committee under the chairmanship of Mark Harper has selected a twenty-seven man squad to prepare for the DJ Stress 20/20 cricket tournament set for July 4 at the Guyana National Stadium.
The City side, known at the Gizmos and Gadgets Georgetown Pitbulls, will be keen to dethrone defending Champions Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers and their squad includes five players with West Indies senior team experience.
The Georgetown selectors will hope that Ramnaresh Sarwan, left out of the West Indies first Test squad due to injury is fit enough to play on July 4 while Travis Dowlin and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who joins Berbician Narsingh Deonarine as the three Guyanese in the Regional team to oppose South Africa in the first Test from Thursday in Trinidad, are also included.
Opener Ryan Ramdass who played his solitary Test in Sri Lanka in 2005 and 22-year-old left-hander Leon Johnson who played 3 ODIs two years ago are the other players with West Indies senior team experience in the squad.
Steven Jacobs and Trevon Griffith are also included while Tyrell Tull will challenge National Keeper Derwin Christian for the gloves in a strong city squad which also include Shemroy Barrington, Christopher Barnwell and Dion Ferrier.
Sarwan younger brother Ravi Sarwan and off-spinner Collis Butts are also in the 27-man squad in which the only real surprise is 19-year-old left-arm unorthodox spinner Totaram Bishun.
Left-arm spinner Andre Stoll, who is expected to leave on July 6 with the National under-19 side, is one of 5 fast bowlers included. Trevon Garraway is the only pacer with First-Class experience in the squad although Police quickie Trevor Benn toured with Guyana during this year’s Regional first-class series but did not play a game.
The team will be coached by 38-year-old former Guyana medium pacer Roddy Lovell, and Managed by 43-year-old Neil Barry.
