Escape specialist Chetram Singh is once again behind bars after being caught hiding in a latrine at Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice, shortly after 21:00 hrs last night.
Singh, a 26-year-old deportee, had escaped on Wednesday from the Reliance Police Station. It was his second escape from the same location in three months.
Kaieteur News understands that acting on a tip-off, ranks from New Amsterdam and Reliance converged on the Betsy Ground area, and eventually located the prisoner in the wooden outhouse.
Singh had slipped away from the police ranks last Wednesday shortly after leaving the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.
At the time, the lockups at the Reliance Police Station were under repair, and Singh and other inmates were in the Enquiries section of the station, when he somehow left the compound without being seen.
He is the third prisoner to have escaped from the Reliance Police Station in recent months. A senior police official has described the incident as ‘slackness’ and an investigation has been launched.
Singh had previously escaped from the station lock ups on March 16 while in custody over the theft of an electrical generator.
On that occasion, the ranks had alleged that the convict had escaped by hitting out a board.
Singh was recaptured in a house at Betsy Ground.
Upon his recapture, the prisoner claimed that he had paid two ranks $35,000 to release him.
Female Special Constable Denita Vandenberg of Reliance has since been charged with allowing Singh to escape. Her colleague, a Neighbourhood Policeman, was not charged.
