Says Michael Benjamin
As the hour draws closer boxing pundits are heatedly discussing the pros and cons of the BrisO Promotions ‘Deadly Encounters’ scheduled for the Princes Hotel International, Providence EBD this Saturday evening.
While the focus seems to be on the DeGroot/Alfred bantamweight and the Camacho/Dalton middleweight title fights, the pundits are also casting their wagers on the Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry/Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers bantamweight contest.
The two fought each other sometime last year and Dharry was adjudged the winner after the referee halted the contest prematurely.
Naturally, Rogers cried foul claiming that he was in control of his faculties and could have continued. His pleas fell on deaf ears and the decision was upheld. Ever since that fight, the two boxers have been trading barbs and it seems as though they have developed a genuine hatred for each other. Yesterday morning, Dharry turned up at the pre-fight press conference at the Princess Hotel International, fully anticipating another grueling battle of words with his old nemesis but was sorely disappointed after Rogers remained in his Berbice base ‘catching up on some blood’ as he put it. This certainly did not prevent ‘The Coolie Bully’ from extolling himself. “I will make him pay for calling me a chicken,” Dharry threatened. He also said that he hoped Rogers’ absence from the press conference was not indicative of his intentions on fight night.
Indeed, Rogers had had his say. He had labeled Dharry every derogatory term from a chicken to a coward and just stopped short of spurting lewd sobriquets. The latter fighter had restrained himself but it seems as though as the night of reckoning draws nigh, both pugilists are primed up and overheating. Speaking on the phone yesterday, moments after Dharry’s pronouncements Rogers said, “I will whip him terribly. There would be no need for the judges’ input.
Dharry was not the only fighter spewing venom. Shondell Alfred joined in the act and promised to repeat her performance over DeGroot, this time erasing all speculation. “She is coming to fight but I am coming prepared for a war,” stated Alfred. DeGroot had blamed referee Eon Jardine for her previous loss, claiming that he had failed to administer the mandatory eight count over Alfred on at least three legitimate occasions. President of the WIBA, Ryan Wissow reviewed the tape and subsequently debunked these views. Yesterday he revealed that Jardine has been replaced by Andrew Thorne to add a semblance of fairness to the proceedings.
Dalton retained his composure even in the face of biting threats from Camacho. As is customary, he acknowledged the presence of God during his preparations. After listening to Camacho as he promised to do everything possible to win Dalton blurted, “Don’t mind what he says, I will take care of business.”
Meanwhile, in answer to a query posed by a journalist from another section of the media, Mr. Wissow informed that while Alfred is fighting for the bantamweight crown, he is assured that she is a natural flyweight boxer. He said that irrespective of the results of the contest with DeGroot, Alfred may get an opportunity to battle for the WIBA flyweight title.
Of the two principals contesting the WIBA heavyweight title bout, only O’Neil was present.
The latter fighter took the opportunity to vent her feelings. “Where is Blackman, like she hiding or wha?” Veronica Blackman coach, Joseph Murray jumped to her defense. “Don’t worry; she’ll be in the ring on fight night.
Later on Blackman arrived and told this reporter that even though she had taken this fight on late notice “she will beat O’Neil bad, bad.” She said that she is hungry for the title; an accolade she feels can enrich the quality of her boxing career. “I will not be denied even if I fall down trying,” declared Blackman.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bristol explained that while the event would be held in the open air, spectators need not be worried of rain. He said that the seating area and the boxing ring would be canopied. “Come out and enjoy a great show in great ambience,” the young promoter said.
Tickets range from $3000 for the poolside to $5000 for the ringside poolside to $10,000 for ringside VIP area and are currently on sale at several business places around town. Weigh in takes place tonight and live internet broadcast can be accessed for a small fee at guyanasportsdevelopment.com.
Shondel ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred defends her World International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight title against Corrine ‘Sexy Panther’ Van Ryke DeGroot in a 10 rounds scrap while light/heavyweights Gwendolyn O’Neil and Veronica Blackman square off for the heavyweight version of the WIBA title, also over 10 rounds.
‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton will also be on show when he attempts to snatch the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) title from Hector ‘Machito’ Camacho in a highly anticipated 10 rounds middleweight duel while Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry matches gloves with Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers over 4 rounds.
