Marketing Manger Western Union Natheeah King hands over the cheque to CEO/Secretary of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster.
– with over $250,000 investment
Conscious of their commitment to the development of youth in a world that presents many challenges for today’s youth, Western Union is one company that is leaving no stone unturned in building a positive foundation for the positive development of young sportsmen in Guyana.
Western Union has partnered with Guyana’s most successful Youth Club, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) to fund the Club’s Junior Ambassador Cricket Programme which started last year (April 2009) with three players.
Briefing the media at a press conference held yesterday at Western Union’s Main Office 19C Water Street, Georgetown, Marketing Manager Natheeah King reiterated that her company’s commitment and interest in the venture is to enhance the performance of the young players by equipping them with the necessary gear and educational assistance that will be beneficial in the long term.
“Cricket as a discipline, has been realizing the dreams of many young people in our country. As such, we at Western Union would like to contribute to the dreams of these young cricketers.”
King stated that when they become famous in the sport, Western Union would be very proud to say that they would have contributed to their successes in making their dreams possible, “Because with Western Union, anything is possible.”
CEO/Secretary/of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster described the progress of the sport in Berbice as “A Revolution” resulting in the sport being played like never before; Western Union he said has played their part in the positive revolution.
Three players (Loyden Lewis, Linden Austin & Shawn Pereira) were involved in the initial year of the programme which aims to guide the young players in fulfilling their potentials by providing the requisite tools while ensuring that they appreciate the importance of education and discipline.
The players will receive sponsorship in the form of cricket gear (helmet, bat, pad, gloves & bag) in addition to educational and hygiene materials valued at $10,000 each.
Western Union will sponsor the programme ($250,000 plus) for the beneficiaries from the Under-15 until they reach Under-19. This year has seen the addition of promising Under-15 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai.
Foster noted that while the programme is for players who are members of the RHTY&SC, they are interested in the development of players outside their club and this is manifested with Motie-Kanhai and Austin who are not members of his club.
“The club is not concerned about our players alone but wants every promising talent in Berbice to develop.”
Lewis and Pereira Foster said are products of a multi-million dollar investment by the RHTY&SC to develop new talent for the future and that the two players are part of a group of exciting players.
Both Lewis and Pereira are currently training with the Guyana Under-19 squad while Motie-Kanhai represented Guyana this year with great success at the Under-15 level when Pereira was Captain. Austin is a member of Young Warriors.
The management and staff of the Club is extending gratitude to Western Union for their commitment and partnership.
Special mention was made of Marketing Manager Natheeah King and her assistant Ms. Hamilton for their assistance and cooperation.
“Western Union is very special to us at this club as they have been a close and reliable supporter of our activities over the years and in 2010 apart from sponsorship have already co-sponsored our Annual Awards Ceremony and would also be co-sponsoring our 20th Awards Ceremony in September.”
In challenging the four players to always aim high, King advised them to always keep an open mind and a compassionate heart. “Approach the game with no preset agendas and you will be surprised with the results of your overall efforts. a famous writer once said, “As you walk down the fairway to life, you must smell the roses along the way, since opportunities don’t present themselves very often.” So when opportunities come your way, grab them! Hold on to them! Breathe them! Enjoy them! Say yes!”
