Despite several warning notices, a pig rearer at Good Hope, on the East Coast of Demerara, continues to defy the Environmental Protection Agency, leaving his swine to roam unattended in the community much to the annoyance of residents there.
The pig rearer, who operates an aluminum window factory, also runs a huge pig farm at the back of that business premises.
Quite frequently, the swine would be let out to graze in the nearby Good Hope Cemetery, rummaging through several grave sites, and posing a serious health threat to the community.
And now with the rains, the stench from the pig rearing facility has become overbearing.
Initially a group of concerned residents, including prominent business owners, had written to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for redress.
However after several visits to the location by EPA officials, the situation remained the same.
This led to the group of concerned citizens meeting with Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, who initiated further action against the pig rearer.
Immediately after that meeting, the pig rearer was issued with a written warning by the EPA, who urged that he relocate his activity.
Again no heed was paid to this warning, and according to a senior EPA official, a Prohibition Notice will be forthcoming.
Over the weekend, several pigs belonging to the errant farmer were seen rummaging through the Good Hope Cemetery damaging tombs in the process.
