Kevin Jeffrey, the most outstanding Guyanese driver at the opening even of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) which was held at the Dover Raceway recently thanked his team for the sterling effort they produced in getting the car ready for race day.
The local speedster, who came away on 24 points just six behind championship leader Jamaica’s David Summerbell Jr. and two adrift of another Jamaican Peter Rae told this newspaper that it took a monumental effort from the guys to get on the grid and even to score points after they had suffered a series of mechanical setbacks leading up to race day.
“I want to personally thank the guys who worked non-stop since we arrived on the island to get the car ready to compete,” Jeffrey said.
He stated that it was a lot of hard work and the crew must take all the credit for what we were able to achieve at the end of the day.
Jeffrey disclosed that prior to race day, they had suffered differential and gear problems along with some degree of difficulty with the transfer box and it was not until race day that they managed to get the car working satisfactorily.
He added that the team of Brian Ten-Pow, John Seabra, Rajiv Rajaram and Omar Crespo did a splendid job.
Jeffrey revealed that the track in Jamaica was very demanding and needed a lot of seat time to get adjusted which he said was enough to be deemed invaluable. He said the experience gained over there could prove vital for the remainder of the Series.
Guyana’s performance
Commenting on Guyana’s performance, Jeffrey in reflecting on the day’s results felt that in the end they finished better than was expected given the problems that had beset the team earlier.
“With all that we went through in terms of getting the machines ready, I would have to say that we actually ended up better that the other teams.”
Jeffrey disclosed that Team Leader Andrew King was extremely unfortunate to suffer from two blown engines, forcing him out of the day’s proceedings.
He said that coming away from Jamaica in the lead overall was a good result and is a step in the right direction in their quest to capture the Caribbean Championship this year.
“Barbados will be tough at home, but because of our sizeable lead over them I still feel that we could come away from Bushy Park still in the ascendancy,” Jeffrey expressed.
Mood in the Team
“The camaraderie in the team was excellent and even though everyone wanted to do well individually, the team always came first,” Jeffrey noted.
He said given the circumstances where every driver wanted to win, but instead put the team ahead, he would have to conclude that there will be no complaints about their performance.
The second round of the championship will be staged in Barbados at the end of August and Jeffrey has issued a call to the corporate community to come on board and offer its assistance to the competitors as Guyana seek to reclaim its rightful place in the CMRC.
Guyana is on 64 points followed by Jamaica on 56 and Barbados in the cellar on 16.
