Mr. Dale Andrews, senior reporter of Kaieteur News, organized for me to meet the CID division of the Alberttown police station yesterday to discuss the progress so far on the attack on me the night of Monday, May 24. As we entered the station, we met Mark Benschop and I invited him to accompany us to the CID division.
My question centered on NCN. But to the surprise of all of us, we were told that the police have not interviewed NCN officials, because the judgement of the CID at Alberttown is that there is no point person at NCN whom the police can identify to talk to.
The officer speaking to me, Dale and Benschop unambiguously stated that it was the decision of the CID not to proceed because the police do not know who at NCN to question. Benschop rose to speak. He told the officer that NCN has an editor. I then took over and explained how a news organization operates. First, there is an editor who is always present during working hours. Secondly, that editor assigns duties to his/her journalists.
Thirdly, even if a reporter covers an event without having the time to inform his/her editor, the final product before it reaches the public is scrutinized by an editor.
NCN reported that the attack on me was because I made advances to a female whose father was upset. NCN further reported that the story was substantiated by an eyewitness with whom NCN spoke.
The CID then shifted ground and told the three of us that as far as they know they saw in the Chronicle that the NCN had changed that story. I explained to the CID that the NCN twice repeated in the Chronicle what it knew about the attack so that there were no changing of stories.
At that point wires got crossed. The CID officer said he was aware that NCN had stated that Kaieteur News misquoted it. I outlined that there were two issues and the officer should not confuse them. I believe he did.
One is that the NCN did state that the Kaieteur News reported it inaccurately, but that should not be tied to what the NCN has clearly outlined, and that is a father threw a miasmic substance on me out of his vexation that I made a pass at his daughter. The investigating officer then promised to look over all the Chronicle’s reports.
Finally, CID said that it may be a waste of time talking to NCN because what happens if NCN does not cooperate. At this time, I was beginning to show signs of irritation. How can NCN refuse to cooperate in a police investigation of a criminal incident?
For the police to just merely suggest that NCN would not cooperate with it symbolizes the immense tragedy of this nation. For a senior police officer to tell me in the presence of a senior journalist and a national political activist that NCN may not cooperate, indicates the level to which the independent police force has become subordinate to the ruling politicians.
There was something Freudian at work when the officer made that statement. Deep in his psychology he knew that he was dealing with the powerful institution of government and not just NCN. For him, NCN symbolizes the Government and the police cannot touch the Government
I told Dale Andrews there and then that not even in the era of Forbes Burnham had the police become such a floor cloth. For those who had doubts about the origin of my attack, the dialogue with the CID division of the Alberttown Police Station should place the complete picture in front of their faces.
A branch of the state media announced that it knows about the reason behind the committal of a criminal offence, but the police cannot contact it because the police do not know who to interview. This admission by the police will definitely drag Guyana further down the chasm of uncivilized behaviour.
If there is a theft at Kaieteur News, the police would not know who to talk with. If there is a fraud at Republic Bank the police would not know who to speak with. If there is a shootout inside the Chronicle, the police would not know who to interrogate. If the safe is missing at NBS, the police would not know who to approach.
All of Guyana should be afraid now that the police have admitted that pinpointing who is in charge of what institution in this country is an impossible task. Guyana is indeed a failed state.
