Hector ‘Machito’ Camacho arrived in Guyana early yesterday morning to keep his ring date with ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton mere hours before Corrine ‘Sexy Panther’ Van Ryck DeGroot arrived for her return bout against Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred at the Princess International Hotel, Providence EBD on Saturday night.
‘Machito’ is accompanied by a high powered team that includes former World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion, Zahir Raheem, his trainer, Robert Lee Velez, his doctor, Lisa Tefteller and Vice President of the World Boxing Federation (WBF), Jack Crider. DeGroot also arrived with a compact team but after a long flight, was too tired to entertain the media
Kaieteur Sport caught up with ‘Machito’ and his team as they relaxed by the Princess Hotel Poolside moments after their arrival. An unassuming fellow, Camacho shied away from predicting a result but simply said, “I am here to perform to the best of my ability.” He admitted that he knew little of Dalton except that he had had epic encounters against Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis and Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman.
“I respect the fact that he fought two great fighters but otherwise I do not know much about him,” admitted Camacho. “When the bell rings I will know all that I want to know,” he exhorted.
A far cry from his father, former world champion, Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho, a garrulous yet charismatic boxer, the younger Camacho assumes a cool, calm, yet deadly disposition. In December 2008, he was scheduled to fight Yory Boy Campas in Tijuana Mexico but was a no show. He later said that he did not sign a contract for the bout. One year later, Camacho defeated Israel Cardona for the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) light/middleweight title.
They say a boxer is as good as his last fight. In his last fight in August last year, Camacho defeated Luis ‘Yori Boy’ Campas at the Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso Texas in defence of the CABOFE title. Two judges scored the bout in Camacho’s favour 96-91 and 95-92, while the other judge had Campas ahead, 92-95. The victory was especially pleasing to the younger Camacho after the same fighter had held his dad to a draw.
Camacho said that his training regiment consists of rigorous roadwork and complimented by hours in the gym addressing the technical aspect of his repertoire. He admits that it is not easy covering his father’s footsteps. “Everyone expects me to emulate my dad every time I entered the ring which placed me under tremendous pressure to perform,” he revealed. He also spoke of his two years hiatus from the sport, “I was not as focused as I should have been,” he said. He further explained that he was partying a lot and that detracted from his goals. But what caused him to return to the ring?
“I noted people who I knew were inferior to me and who I could have beaten, making lots of money so I felt that I needed to reclaim my share,” he said.
“Machito feels that he has adjusted to the situation and has managed to get his career back on track. Could this mean that it is curtains for Dalton? “I’m here to give the Guyanese people a good performance and have some fun,” he said.
At the end of the fight the spectators would be truly entertained,” he promised while staying clear of a prediction.
The overseas team was scheduled to open camp at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym, Albouystown yesterday afternoon.
This morning they will be the guests at a press conference at the Princess International Hotel starting at 10:00hrs.
