– camera footage leads to arrests, recovery of revolver
Armed bandits struck the Demerara Distillers Limited Head Office at Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara early yesterday morning, overpowering three guards and relieving them of two firearms.
Their attempts to cut their way through security locks were however thwarted by the prompt response of ranks from a DDL mobile patrol, which arrived on the scene.
By late yesterday afternoon, thanks to the diligent work by the DDL Internal Security, two of the suspects were arrested and one of the weapons was recovered.
According to a statement issued by the company, via a prominent local public relations firm, at approximately 12:45hrs yesterday, three armed men attempted to carry out a robbery at Demerara Distillers Limited, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, after gaining access to the compound.
The statement indicated that during the attempt, the gunmen overpowered and bound three guards on duty at the time, relieving two of them of their firearms.
Kaieteur News understands that the bandits entered the compound from the south-western side, near the Demerara River.
According to a source, the guards were attacked individually, each by three armed men.
Two of the guards were carrying firearms – a .32 revolver and a shotgun – while the other was carrying a baton.
The source said that all the guards were at different locations in the compound when they were attacked.
From all indications, the bandits appeared to be aware of the location where cash and other valuables were stored.
Following the attack, DDL Internal Security personnel reviewed footage from surveillance cameras situated in the Diamond compound and after intensive interviews they were able to come up with a positive identification on one of the suspects who turned out to be one of their off-duty guards.
The guard was arrested and based on information he provided, the other suspect was detained while the hunt continues for the third man.
According to a police release, acting on information received, yesterday afternoon an operation was conducted on the East Bank of Demerara during which the .32 revolver which was stolen during the robbery was recovered. Two other firearms that are suspected to be illegal were also recovered.
