Guyana’s fourth Annual observance of World Challenge Day was held on Friday last at the Guyana National Stadium with several physical/sport activities organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission.
A release from the NSC disclosed that, over one thousand enthusiastic school children and teachers from some twenty – two schools turned up to participate in the organized programme.
Unfortunately, the inclement weather adversely affected the much anticipated events of the day.
However, the large gathering, which included the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Mr. Alfred King, Director of Sport, Mr. Neil Kumar, representatives of various Ministries including Ministry of Education, Ministry of Amerindian Affairs were treated to an inspirational rendition of the National Anthem by Miss Liesa Punch and motivational talks by the Hon. Minister, the Permanent Secretary and the Director of Sport.
The three top ranking officials of the Ministry were common in their messages by urging all Guyanese to spend at least a few minutes each day participating in a physical activity by stressing the importance of sports being used to mobilize, organize and unite our people, by calling on our people to become health conscious so that this country can become the most physically fit.
The participants were then taken through their warm up paces. Because of the wet conditions only Martial Arts and Volleyball demonstrations were done on the field.
Those present were treated to top class performances by the Black Hawks Martial Arts Group and the Guyana Karate Federation. All were impressed with the displays.
Table Tennis demonstrations were done under the pavilion involving pupils and adults. To the disappointment of all, a greater part of the scheduled activities had to be cancelled.
The concept of World Challenge Day is for groups of people all over the world to participate in indoor and outdoor activities with a focus on healthy living and building bonds of friendship among people.
