Delroy Pereira lashed a swashbuckling half century (56) in an eventual total of 130-7 for AN&S Auto Sales and Spares in their allotted 15 overs, to lead his team to a comfortable 50 runs victory over Vikings XI when play in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket competition continued over the past weekend at venues countrywide.
Laced with five sixes and two fours, Pereira’s innings overshadowed the opposition’s best bowler, Robin Sammy’s effort (3-12 from 3 overs) while ensuring that his team progressed to the semi-finals after retaining the top position in the East Coast zone.
Davendra Persaud then turned in a commendable bowling spell, taking 4 wickets for a miserly 7 runs from 3 tight overs to restrict Vikings XI to 80 all out in 14.3 overs. This was despite a commendable knock from Kenny Trotman (33).
AN&S Auto Sales and Spares returned later in the day to defeat Bomb Squad XI by a decisive 70 runs. AN&S Auto Sales and spares won the toss and defied the murky conditions to take first strike. Davendra Persaud supported his bowling performance in the first match with a sterling contribution with the bat, falling short of a half century by merely 3 runs.
He received commendable support from Delroy Pereira who scored 35 in a partnership that netted 60 runs off 42 balls and ensured that AN&S Auto Sales and Spares reached 143-4 when their 15 overs had expired.
Marlon Babb (1-12 from his 3 overs) turned in the best bowling figures for Bomb Squad XI but in a losing cause.
The latter team found the going tough from the onset, losing wickets at regular intervals. Ganpat Narine (3-20 from his 3 overs) and Delroy Pereira (2-22 from his 3 overs) bowled enterprisingly and eventually dismissed the opposition for 73 in 10.2 overs. Munesh Singh scored 19 runs to take the batting honours for the losers.
Both teams will now challenge the lower East Coast champions and runners up respectively, to qualify for the national quarter-finals scheduled for a later date. The Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports organized the tournament.
