Junior Power Lifting sensation, Berbician Vijay Rahim’s record breaking performance was the highlight of the just concluded Banks Power Stout sponsored Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation Claude Charles Memorial Intermediate championships, held at the St. Stanislaus College Auditorium on Sunday last.
Rahim competing out of the Hardcore Gym and lifting in the Sub-Junior, Junior and men’s open (56kg) division erased his old record of 192.5kg’s achieved at the Caribbean Championships earlier this year to set a new record of 215kg’s with his third attempt having dead lift 197.5 and 210 with his respective 1st and 2nd attempts.
Banks Power Stout Brand Manager Jeoff Clement (4th left) poses with the category winners of the Banks Power Stout/GAPF/Claude Charles Memorial Championships.
Based on his continued outstanding performances, Rahim, who also won his category on Sunday, was given the opportunity to attempt the World Record of 221kgs, came close but failed to achieve the mark due to a technical fault in his lift.
President of the GAPF Peter Green said he continues to be impressed by Rahim’s performances and disclosed that Rahim will be included on Guyana’s team to contest the IPF/NAPF Regional Championships set for Puerto Rico August 3rd – 7th. This will be Rahim’s last chance to ink his name into the books at the sub junior level.
“He will be receiving special attention and correctional lifting techniques from the judges to supplement the fine job being done by his personal coach Farouk Abdool,” Green noted.
Wazeem Immamdeen of Total Fitness Gym contesting the 60 kg junior class bettered his marks set at the Caribbean championships in the squat 167.5kgs with 192.5kgs, bench of 100kgs (110kgs), deadlift (210kgs) now 215kgs as well as the overall total of 477.5kgs with a new total of 517.5.
Wazeem’s new squat mark of 192.5kgs replaces the old national record achieved by I. Martelli (190kgs) set in 1992 while his overall total of 517.5kgs betters Immamdeen’s old standard of 501.
In the Intermediate Category Marvin Richards of Buddies Gym continued his fine form from the novice’s competition to capture first place lifting in the 100kg weight class after being overweight by 1.02 kg which ruled him out of his usual 90 kg weight class.
Meanwhile, the GAPF will release the names of athletes selected to participate in the IPF / NAPF Regional Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games Powerlifting Championships from August 3rd – 7th 2010, both in Puerto Rico, shortly.
The Federation is also extending its appreciation to Banks DIH under their Power Stout brand for their continued support to toe sport.
