Dear Editor,
I believe the time is ripe to call on the board that manages the affairs of the Catholic Standard (CS) the only Catholic and religious newspaper in Guyana, to immediately review the newspaper’s goals, objectives and true purpose of the publication.
It is my opinion the newspaper, which is over 100 years old in Guyana, has remained in the ancient days and has not lived up to its mandate as a Catholic organ of literature for Guyanese, and more particularly the Catholic population here. The newspaper, as I have observed over the years, has been ailing in its contents and this is most sad.
Just look at other Catholic publications and newspapers around the world, even in our sister Caribbean islands. The Catholic Standard sadly leaves much to be desired today.
Of course, this is not blaming just a group of people or the editor, whom, I’ve met on numerous occasions — a very humble person — however, I hope my pen can stir up more views out there, especially within the Catholic community to raise awareness of the poor state in which the CS is currently in. It can surely be more than what it is today. It can surely carry more information than what it carries today. It can surely be a more dynamic paper in which the entire masses can relate to. Yes, I hear the CS has been around in Guyana through some very tumultuous times, during the dictatorship regime and when violence rained in Guyana. The CS was victimized and starved for newsprint. It was a paper of justice and whenever it spoke, it spoke with fire and authority. I am sure the thought behind bringing a Catholic news literature organ in 1905 was no decision taken over night; if only that same zeal could be recaptured today.
Today, what has the Catholic Standard watered down to? I hope the big ones in the Diocese of Georgetown are listening — I mean really listening because they pretend to listen and they are very complacent and reluctant when it comes to people sharing their views.
Buying this paper makes very little sense today, and I am sure those who still buy it are unconscious of what they are really doing when they pay that $40 in their respective churches every Sunday.
We can really make a bigger impression on our readers each week with a more vision- driven Catholic newspaper in Guyana. This is (Catholic) journalism of the 21ST Century. Review the CS now!
