Set to face T&T in Barbados on Sunday
By Sean Devers
Under the watchful eyes of Coach Bharat Mangru, the 18-member National Blind cricket squad is working hard as they prepare to face-off with Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday at the Carlton Ground in Barbados in their opening match of the 5th West Indies Cricket Council for the Blind Championships.
Coach Mangru (right) conducts a jogging session with the National Blind Cricket squad at the National Gymnasium yesterday.
The squad, which has five Berbicians including the lone female member, Schemona Trinidad, has been encamped at the National Gymnasium from Monday and will break camp at 14:00hrs today before preparing to depart Guyana on Saturday.
The 14-member squad which will be coached by Mangru, the West Indies Blind team’s Coach to the 2006 World Cup in Pakistan, should be named today and Patrick Howard, one of three West Indies players in the side should be retained as Skipper.
Ganesh Singh and Oliver Kerr, who like Howard, made their West Indies debuts in the World Cup in Pakistan, are the other West Indies players in the side which should be managed by Theresa Pemberton.
While Trinidad, a finalist in the Cellink Kids stage song competition turns 15 on June 8, 13-year-old Asif Khan who has been playing at the Regional level since the inaugural tournament in Barbados in 2006, is the youngest member of the side which also include two 35 year-olds in Amin Britton and Robert Weeks.
Guyana, who missed the 2007 tournament in Jamaica, finished third in the 2008 competition in Trinidad before failing to win a game on home soil last year.
Pemberton says the players have bonded really well since the entire team has been regularly attending several workshops with other differently-abled groups.
Both President of the Guyana Blind Cricket Council Mark Harper and Pemberton expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment shown by the players and Pemberton was especially pleased with the desire to work hard and the level of improvement from Trinidad.
Pemberton, who thanked the National Sports Commission (NSC) for the use of the Gymnasium, said the Gymnasium management has been very supportive since the team moved into the facility on Monday.
The players are working on their fitness and technical skills and Coach Mangru feels that the team has a very good chance this year in a tournament that has been won every year by Jamaica.
A lack of funds has been the major worry and up to yesterday afternoon it was not clear if the Guyana team, scheduled to leave on a Caribbean Airlines flight early Saturday morning, would be able to make the trip although the fixtures have already been made-up. Several individuals and entities, including Food for the Poor, have made contributions.
Guyana play Barbados on June 7 and Jamaica on June 9 and performances for this competition will be used to select a West Indies team to battle Australia in a three-match 40 overs series and two 20/20 matches.
The three Regional teams will each play a practice 20/20 match against the Australians before the International series commence on June 15.
