McGillvary suffered mixed fortunes in their respective finals of this year’s Seerja Construction Company Region 3 Primary Schools Windball Championships which ended last Friday, at the Uitvligt Community Centre ground.
In what was the first in the history of Windball Cricket, Zone champions from Leguan, Wakenaam, West Bank and West Coast Demerara and East Bank Essequibo met at one venue to compete in the Regional finals, semi-finals and 3rd place matches.
In the Boys final, Meten Meer Zorg defeated Mc Gillvary, while in the Girls Division Mc Gillivary defeated Leonora.
In the Boys final-
Meten-Meer-Zorg beat McGillvary by 19 runs.
Meten-Meer-Zorg invited to take first strike made 42-6 off 5 overs with Looknauth Chinkoo 16 and Mark Jeffers 14, being the principal scorers. Delon Souvenir picked up 2-15.
Mc Gillivary in their turn at the crease was restricted to 23-7. Player of the final Kelvin Sherprashad grabbed 4-5.
Semi-final action saw games reduced to 4 overs because of rain.
In the first match, McGillvary defeated Sans Souci by 13 runs.
Mc Gillivary made 43-3 with Alex Sookdeo 20. Daniel Thomas took 2 wkts.
San Souci in reply could only muster 30-3, Naseeb Khellawan 15.
Meten-Meer-Zorg then beat Eastern Leguan by eight wickets.
Eastern Leguan compiled 22-3.
Meten-Meer-Zorg knocked off the runs, ending on 24-2 off 2.2 overs. Mark Jeffers made 10.
Eastern Leguan and San Souci finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
In the Girls final reduced to 5 overs-
McGillvary registered a narrow 2-run win over Leonora.
Mc Gillivary made 57-1 after been invited to bat with Satyawattie Sugrim 24 which includes three 6’s, Rohini Doodnauth 11 and Mercedes Alfred 10, the principal contributors.
Leonora replied with 55-5. Shamaine Jones hit a top-score of 21, while Player of the Final Doodnauth grabbed 2-21.
In semi-final play-
Leonora beat Sans Souci by seven wickets.
San Souci reached 36-2 with Fazeena Hamid 13.
Leonora in their response ended on 37 -3 with Dhanwantie Basdeo 11. Lisa Ramlakhan picked up 2-7.
In the other game with Stewartville who was drafted in for Richmond Hill.
Mc Gillivary made 64-0, with R Doodnauth 38, S Sugrim 11.
Stewartville in reply made 27-1, Cassandra Mason 11
Thirty-eight school teams participated in the tournament with Den Amstel playing for the first time.
Meanwhile, sponsor Bholanauth Ramdial speaking at the presentation ceremony promised the students a bigger and better tournament come next year which could also see the finals being played in one of the Essequibo Islands.
Co-ordinator of the tournament Alister Munroe, who is attached to the National Sports Commission extended thanks to the Management and Ground staff of Wales & Uitvlugt Estates, the President of Essequibo Cricket Board, the REO Region 3, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport, NSC and all those officials who give of their time freely to ensure a successful tournament .
