The Aracari Resort is expected to come alive this Saturday when the Guyana Volleyball Federation –organised four-man Beach Tournament which is being sponsored by Aracari Resort opens with first round action among the sixteen teams.
The competition which has prize money totalling in excess of $300,000 will see the country’s best volleyball players take to the sand in their quest to grab the first prize of $100,000 plus a trophy.
Players from Georgetown, West Demerara, Berbice and Linden are expected to participate in the round-robin event which will run until August 3.
According to tournament organiser Ian Wills, the losing finalist will receive $75,000 plus a trophy; 3rd place-$50,000 and 4th place $25,000, while prizes will also be awarded to outstanding individual performances.
Sixteen teams have been placed in groups of four with the top team in each category moving on to contest the semi-final and final.
Among the top players anticipated to turn out for their respective teams are Achievers Randy Adams and Michael Trapp, Berbice’s Seon Glasgow and Levi Nedd, Castrol’s Ian Wills and Adolph Davis.
Additionally, the Organisers have said that female players will also be engaged in a separate competition which is being sponsored by the GVF and are therefore urging fans to come put in their numbers to witness them in action.
Serve off time is 12:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, President of the GVF Lenox Shuffler speaking at the launching of the tournament last Saturday revealed that because of various factors including the difficulty to obtain the use of the indoor facility the focus has shifted somewhat to the outdoor format.
He added that it has also become one of the more popular attractions in the sport. He, however, mentioned that the indoor segment is not being ignored, disclosing that a tournament is being planned and will be staged shortly.
