Vikings XI eked out a close 5 runs victory over Auto fashion XI to book a place in the Upper East Coast zone when play in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket tournament continued at venues countrywide.
Vikings XI won the toss and elected to bat scoring 106-5 in their 15 overs with the in form Kenny Trotman scoring 34 and Robin Sammy 19. Lakeram Koardat snared 2-14 from his 3 overs to capture the bowling honours for Auto Fashion but his efforts were reduced to zilch.
Auto Fashion started their reply brightly, scoring 20 runs in the first 2 overs. Their progress was checked somewhat after losing Lakeram Latchman for 16 and shortly afterwards, Ewert Bourne for 13. They were eventually bowled out for 101 in 12.1 overs. Kenny Trotman returned with the ball to capture 3-11 off his 3 overs with support from Robin Sammy (2-18 from 3 overs) and Terrence King (2-13 from his 3 overs).
Vikings will now face A N&S Auto Fashion in one of the semis to be played later. Meanwhile in another zone match, Farmers XI defeated Multi Tech XI by 5 wickets to move closer to winning the Upper East Coast title.
Multi Tech XI won the toss and batted scoring 113 all out in 11.3 overs. Rajesh Rambharose (51) and Denesh Narine (30) were the principal batsmen. In reply Farmers XI made 114-5 in 12.5 overs after Gautam Verma top scored with a resilient 48 with support from Bryan Singh (20).
Meanwhile in matches in the Essequibo Island zone, Nazir XI defeated all the teams contesting this zone and earned the right to challenge Leguan Champs.
Results of those matches: they beat Knight Riders XI by 4 wickets, Zeelandia by 30 runs and All Stars XI in the finals by 60 runs. All Star then defeated Dare Devils by 7 wickets and moves on to play Nazir XI. The match against Leguan Champs was disrupted due to the inclement weather. That match would be played at a later date.
