President Jagdeo returned home with the announcement that he received an award from the UN Environmental Agency for being one of the champions of Planet Earth’s preservation. His Cabinet subordinates, using state funds, decided to put on a big bash at the Convention Centre.
The expectation one supposed was that Mr. Jagdeo would use his appearance to either speak of inclusive politics, the cleaning up of Georgetown or some words of comfort to those who seek a better future in their country.
As expected. Mr. Jagdeo missed the class act. He was his usual self. Insults and demagoguery laced his presentation. He referred to people who always criticize the Government and never speak of the positives. He told his audience that there are five old men who appear everyday in the newspapers.
He derogated them as “very old men” who belonged to the past. Since that sordid observation of Mr. Jagdeo, I have had many enquiries of who these five men are and if I am on the list. I honestly don’t know who Mr. Jagdeo has in mind. As an analyst, I find it confusing keeping up with the logics of Mr. Jagdeo. There are no logics to this man’s judgements. Any commentator can write two columns a day analyzing the politics of Mr. Jagdeo. Mr. Jagdeo is simply prone to excessive mistakes.
First, I cannot be on the list. I do not know what Mr. Jagdeo means by “very old” but I am not a very old person in the sense that such words are used all over the world. Mr. Jagdeo is ten years my junior. When I am a hundred years old, I become an ancient creature and Mr. Jagdeo would not be very far behind as a very old man at ninety.
Secondly, there aren’t five persons that write in the paper everyday. There are only two such persons; me and Peeping Tom. I think I know who Peeping Tom is and he is the same age of Mr. Jagdeo. There are two other persons who write everyday in the papers.
These are the editors of the two independent dailies. Adam Harris of the Kaieteur News is not an old man and Anand Persaud is the same age with Mr. Jagdeo. So to conclude then, it remains a mystery as to who these daily old writers are.
What there is no mystery about is the way Mr. Jagdeo carries on – logics go out the window. Here are some “logical postures” and logical contradictions of The President of Guyana. We can start with his Champion of the Earth crown. Logics would dictate to Mr. Jagdeo that his status as a Champion of the Earth conflicts with the unimaginable nastiness that has enveloped the totality of the capital city and it is getting worse.
Unless Mr. Jagdeo has an impenetrable psyche, he must feel some measure of shame of what Georgetown has become. The UN people that gave Mr. Jagdeo his accolade may not know about the odious ambience of Georgetown in Guyana but Mr. Jagdeo has to be conscious that his fellow citizens know about it, and live in it.
Not only will the Guyanese people laugh at him but they will lose even the last drop of respect they have for him as the President of the land. Here is a President that eulogizes himself for becoming a Champion of the Earth yet the capital and its environs stink to high heaven and have been like that for the decade that he has been in power. The citizens of such a country find such hypocrisy and double standard overbearing. Such are the logics of Mr. Jagdeo.
Finally, we come to the greatest contortion of logics in Mr. Jagdeo’s presidency since he assumed that tie in 1999. When asked why his Government withdrew state advertisements from the Stabroek News, he was lyrical and sounded like a great administrator.
According to His Excellency, the Government has to put its money in a newspaper that reaches the people of Guyana. He said Stabroek News didn’t have such a market. By some weird logical contortion, the Guyana Times ended up with just as much state advertisements as the Kaieteur News and the Stabroek News even though it is yet to achieve any substantial readership.
There is hardly a market for the Guyana Times but plenty of advertisements. Courtesy of course of the logics of President Jagdeo. There may be five old men but there is also a young “champion” in the midst that the future has turned its back on. He’s a failure.
