My prediction, since the Guyana Government descended into the pit of fascism somewhere around 2004, was that more East Indian Guyanese would come out into the open and criticize elected dictatorship in this land. The latest is Dr. Churaumanie Bissundyal, the poet and author who lives in the US. He has written one of the most poignantly penned and astutely perceptive newspaper letters to be published since the PPP came to power in 1992, on the nature of bad governance and the evil of the governors in Guyana.
Dr. Bissundyal’s observation and assessments (KN, May 28, 2010) are worthy of reprint and I hope he submits it to the Stabroek News and other newspapers around the Caricom region. Dr. Bissundyal opens his missive with the thought that if he should write a book he will title it; “Day of the Champion.”
Here is the poet in his own words; “In this piece, I will write about a filthy man with a filthy mind, a depraved hero who has fallen into the convolutions of his primitive instincts, a man who can’t contain his love and resolve to wallow in filth. This book I will write will have a basic theme, with a question: How can a man be a champion of decency when he is the prisoner of the lowest qualities of the human mind, a man obsessed with the crudest repulsiveness on Earth of a thing called filth.” (End of quote)
Since the topic of Dr. Bissundyal’s imaginary book is about a man who is a champion but dwells in filth, the idea has come to me to write a similar manuscript.
I hope to get down soon to putting together my volume. Let me offer readers a glimpse into the manuscript. First let me tell you that my inspiration to do the book draws from the legacy of one of my heroes, Dr. Walter Rodney.
During his radical days, Rodney spoke about a leader who had the Midas touch in reverse. In case you do not know, King Midas was a character in ancient Greek mythology. Whatever he touched turned to gold.
Walter Rodney told his listeners that whatever the Guyanese King Midas touched turned to filth. Walter also nicknamed the Guyanese King Midas, King Kong.
My book is titled; “The Champion and His Weapon of Filth.” It is the story about a monarchial champion of a poverty stricken country who loves power for the sake of power. He presides over a nation that resents him and laughs at him because he has no substance.
Everything the champion touches turns to filth but the champion is suffering from gargantuan delusions of grandeur. King Midas is his hero and in his mind the champion believes that he is the reincarnation of King Midas. The champion cannot accept that his kingdom is overflowing with filth because when he looks at the filth it appears as gold in his eyes.
One day, as the champion’s wife was leaving because she had enough of the phantasmagoria of delusions with which the walls of the kingdom are plastered, she left him a mirror as a parting gift.
Mindful of the story of beauty and the beast and what happened to the beast when he saw his face in the mirror, she admonished the champion only to look into the mirror when the people re-elect him but not before.
But despite his imaginations of invincibility, the champion was smart enough to know that the people will never re-elect him, and like King Richard in Shakespeare’s play, will soon need to trade his kingdom for a horse.
Ignoring the wish of his clairvoyant wife, the champion took a peep into the mirror and was revolted at what he saw. He wasn’t King Midas but King Kong.
Filled with the passion of Narcissus, the champion refused to believe what he saw. He decided to travel throughout the kingdom with his bennettitaceous sycophants armed with a long sword that another false King Midas had awarded him. He went from door to door asking his subjects one question – “To you, am I King Midas or King Kong?” The sun glittering against the champion’s bald head and maximizing the image of the steel sword drove fear into the subjects who all answered; “Yes, you are King Midas!”
The last stop was at the doorstep of a philosophy professor. He told the champion that he was King Kong. Enraged, the champion summoned one of his hermaphrodite servants who carried a bucket of filth.
He was ordered to throw the filth on the professor. The citizens were livid and thereafter named King Kong, “The Champion of Filth.”
