The junior welterweight bout between Republican, Nankumar Singh and Police, Ray Sandiford was unofficially billed as the main attraction in the amateur segment of the fifth edition of the monthly ProAm boxing extravaganza.
The bout which was organized by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and the National Communications Network (NCN) evolved into a near one-sided affair when the former fighter employed roughhouse tactics and eventually earned a 2-1 nod over the latter.
The night’s proceedings got underway when Dexter Wray boxed his way to a 3-0 verdict over Troy Biley in their junior/flyweight contest and lightweight Lared Stuart overwhelming George Anthony in the lightweight division. Subsequently, middleweights Devon Boatswain and Bert Braithwaite engaged in a three rounds exhibition match after Boatswain initial opponent, Dennis Thomas failed to turn up for the contest.
Sandiford and Singh started the contest very watchful of each other, neither willing to take unnecessary chances. The Republican boxer was the first to launch an offensive when he connected with several ‘inside’ shots.
Fighting out of a southpaw stance Sandiford failed to read Nankumar and paid for this deficiency with several telling punches to his head. To his credit, Singh dictated the fight and on most occasions had Sandiford fighting on the inside when he should have been boxing on the outside. This was the general pattern of the three rounds even though Sandiford did enjoy some bright moments. In the end, the stocky Nankumar used his body strength to muscle his way to a 2-1 verdict.
Meanwhile, Boatswain would have gained valuable glove work from his exhibition contest with Braithwaite. Already selected to represent Guyana at the Central American and Caribbean Games, Braithwaite is now undergoing training sessions on a national squad identified by members of the GABA selection committee.
