The five-year-old girl who was brutalised by her foster parents is still hospitalised at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, Best Village.
According to sources, the foster parents have been charged with Child Abuse and are set to attend the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The 13-year-old girl who was also accused of being involved in the beating is in police custody at the Den Amstel Police station.
The source stated that the guardians of the five year old wanted to settle the matter after it was brought into the public domain; however, concerned relatives of the five-year-old declined to cover up the story or to be compensated.
According to an aunt, the five-year-old has two brothers who live with their grandmother and a sister who lives with her mother. But no one knew what was happening to the five-year-old at the foster parents’ home until the police contacted her.
On Thursday, teachers at a La Grange Nursery School found marks of violence on the five-year-old.
According to a source, a teacher saw that the child had marks on her body and confronted the child. Upon closer examination, several severe abrasions were found.
“She has a brand around her foot… the child said it was barbed wire. She has a cut on her hand and she said a boy (name given) cut her with a knife and a girl (name given) would take her clothes off and beat her with a belt.”
According to the source, the child is being taken care of by foster parents since her real parents are incapable of doing so. It was revealed that the child’s parents are separated and the mother has four other children, while the father works in the interior.
It was further revealed that the most recent beating was administered to the five-year-old after she took away a “shak shak” from her foster mother’s child. The vicious assault reportedly escalated after the foster father came home, with the 13-year-old joining the older pair in the act.
The abused child’s mother was taken to the Ministry of Human Services earlier in the year after relatives claimed that she was being neglected.
