GCA Spinner’s and batting against spin clinic a success

Summer camp for city cricketers being planned
While several off-the-field incidents are worsening the already negative image of Guyana’s cricket following another poor showing at the Regional level this year, the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) and the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) continue to play their part in the development of cricketers under their jurisdiction.
Yesterday a one-day ‘spin bowling and batting against spin bowling clinic’ held at the National Gymnasium was described as a success by GCA President and former West Indies Test player and Coach Roger Harper.
The clinic, which catered for senior cricketers who ply their trade for city clubs and those who represented Georgetown at the under-15 and under-19 levels, commenced at 09:30hrs and concluded at 16:00hrs with a lunch break.
The Clinic was sponsored to the tune of $126,000 by Safeway Security of Albert Street Georgetown and the Company’s Managing Director Eon Caesar who was present yesterday was very impressed with the session and disclosed that as a cricket fan, he feels that sessions dealing with discipline and ethics are as important to the technical and physical sessions when you look at where West Indies cricket is today. He said that as a businessman he is keen to assist with the overall improvement of the young cricketers in the City.
Harper led the Spin bowling coaching session yesterday with assistance from former Guyana off-spinner Gavin Nedd and Coach Barath Mangru while Harper’s elder brother Mark, a former Guyana batsman, spearheaded the ‘batting against spin’ section with help from former Guyana players Neil Barry, (a GCA Vice-President) and Roddy Lovell.
Clips from yesterday’s clinic will be shown on Friday’s TV show ‘between the sticks with the GCA which is shown every other Friday evening on NCN.
The participants were urged to take what they learnt yesterday back to their clubs and to practice as much as possible on their own, even during the rainy season since preparing for success at the highest level takes full-time commitment and plenty of dedication, discipline and time.
Harper said a summer camp is also being planned by the GCA. (Sean Devers)
