Dear Editor,
The Five-Party People’s Partnership won a unique and historic landslide victory as Trinidad & Tobago elected its first female Prime Minister.
The landslide victory is testimony to the fact that democracy works within a multiethnic and multiracial society. Kamal Persad-Bissessar’s United National Congress’ (UNC) alliance with Dr. Winston Dookeran’s Congress of the People (COP) and others, created a new dawn for all Trinidadians, as the people of all ethnicities came out in full force in support of this alliance.
Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar commands substantial political experience; she holds the distinct honour of being the first woman to act as Prime Minister of T&T; she was the first woman Attorney General in 1995-96; Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar was also Minister of Education in 1999-2001; she was a Senator in 1994-95.
Trinidad Guardian’s Maxine Williams talked about the failure of former Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s gender and race baiting in the election campaign. And the People’s Partnership won many of Manning’s PNM traditional strongholds as Arima, D’abadie/O’Meara and Toco, as the voters in T&T voted to express their disgust at corruption and crime.
Williams noted that “…Trinidadians and Tobagonians were tired of crime and corruption and the arrogance of someone who saw himself as a “maximum leader”. They chose a female prime minister and an Indian-supported, multi-ethnic coalition of labour leaders, human rights and social activists…”
The People’s Partnership captured these seats: Arima, Barataria/San Juan, Caroni Central, Caroni East, Chaguanas East, Chaguanas West, Couva North, Couva South, Cumuto Manzanilla, D’abadie/O’Meara, Fyzabad, La Horquetta/Talparo, Lopinot/Bon Air West, Mayaro, Naparima, Oropouche East, Oropouche West, Pointe-a-Pierre, Princes Town, Moruga/Tableland, San Fernando West, Siparia, St Augustine, St Joseph, Tabaquite, Tobago East, Tobago West, Toco/Sangre Grande and Tunapuna.
The PNM won these constituencies: Arouca/Maloney, Diego Martin West, Diego Martin Central, Diego Martin North/East, La Brea, Laventille East/Morvant, Laventille West, Point Fortin, Port of Spain North/St Ann’s West, St Ann’s East, PoS South, and San Fernando East.
This was Manning’s most awful electoral performance where he lost his 11-seat majority in the previous Parliament, and only obtained 12 seats in this election.
With 29 seats, the People’s Partnership has a three-fifth constitutional majority that would enable it to pass legislation on rights; it also has a two-third majority that would allow it to alter the Constitution, but not on matters pertaining to the Presidency and its powers, Parliament, and the electoral system; to do these would require 31 seats.
Congratulations to Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar on being the first female Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago!
