It’s on today rain or no rain at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) hosts its inaugural Under-23 Track and Field Games.
Guyana’s foremost athletes between the ages of 16 and 22 will set new rivalries as the association stages the much-anticipated event to bridge the intermediate divide that exists between junior and senior athletes.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce stated yesterday that it will be held whether or not it rains today except the downpour is astronomical.
“Yes it is on; we’re just fine tuning the logistics. The ground is fully prepared and where there is a little water, we will be draining and doing some mopping up if we need to,” Boyce told this newspaper when contacted.
He said that he would have liked the ground to be a little drier, but that is not possible given the amount of rain that fell this past week.
“We cannot afford another postponement. We have already had one and everything is set to host the meet tomorrow (today). We will be branding the ground in the morning (this morning) and so on,” Boyce added ahead of the mega meet.
What is sure is that the competition will certainly answer some questions that have been circulating for some time around athletic circles when junior sprint queen, Tiffany Carto challenges former junior sprint champion, Niesa Allen.
Carto, who is under 20 years old, will take on Allen, who just crossed the U-20 border, in the 100m and 200m races. Carto has enjoyed some success this year at both the schools and national levels, but can she rise to the ultimate challenge?
Allen is perhaps the next candidate for Guyana’s senior sprint crown after progressing through the junior years with some notable wins. Standing in her way, though, is Leota Babb, who will also be competing in the sprint events. The female sprint races will be a heated contest between, Carto, Allen, Babb and Nadine Rodrigues. It is a rivalry that will be on show for first time and one that these athletes will use to settle the score and add to their bragging rights.
The male sprints will be no different as Rupert Perry aims at continuing his ascendancy against an impressive field. Perry has already declared at the launching of the event that the meet will be his time to shine, but can he be eclipsed?
The technically correct, Chavez Ageday has had lots of local and international exposures this year, and is likely to bring that form into today’s competition where he faces his first real test on local shores since climbing to the top. The male 100m and 200m races will be a toss up between Perry, Ageday and Patrick King, who is also having a good year. There can be surprises as sprints always prove on the big stage, and this is certainly a major platform. The middle and long distance events will also be as competitive with double CARIFTA gold medallist, Jevina Straker looking to assert herself among a few seniors U-23 and the 400m and 800m specialist, Phillip Drayton looking to do the same.
Digicel, Noble House Seafoods, Starr Party Rentals, Wireless Connections, Fon Roje Variety Store, Prakash Variety Store, G&R Bovell Construction Company and the Trophy Stall are the sponsors of the AAG U-23 Games.
